Quirky baby names

Quirky baby names

A ‘quirky’ name means one that’s unconventional and perhaps even slightly off-the-wall! Remember, though, your child will have to live with this name, so choose carefully. It’s great to have a name which is a bit different and not run-of-the-mill, but you also want your child to be proud of it. My parents chose slightly quirky names for me and my two brothers: Sasha, Andrei and Jethro. Apart from my brothers’ friends  occasionally rhyming his name ‘Jethro’ with ‘Death Row’ when he was a teenager, people have generally been quite complimentary about our names. Jethro has then continued the quirky theme with the names he’s given his children: Saskia, Jasper and Micha. Andrei, similarly, has given his daughters  the unconventional names of Theodora and Alya. These are all beautiful, unique names which have a traditional feel to them, so they’re not so crazy and different that the child is open to ridicule.

Quirky names are individual and make a statement . They’re creative choices, which are unusual yet simultaneously quite classic.  So, if you decide to name your baby something slightly off-beat, you can’t now guarantee that they’ll be the only one in their class with that name. It might be a good idea to go to your local park and sit for a while listening to which names parents are calling out to their children. You may have thought Flynn was original until you discover half the playground is called Flynn too! Names go in crazes, so even when you think you are being original, there may be a whole generation of children behind you, called what you named your child.
